Red Sox shortstop is set to undergo career ending surgery.
Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story will undergo season-ending surgery on his left shoulder, according to chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. Story sustained a dislocated left shoulder during a game against the Los Angeles Angels last Friday when he dove to make a play.
He was examined by shoulder specialist Dr. Evan O’Donnell in Boston on Monday, and manager Alex Cora confirmed the news wasn’t positive, expressing concern about the bone structure. Breslow revealed that Story has a fractured glenoid in his left shoulder, necessitating surgery with a six-month recovery time.
Additionally, the Red Sox placed right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow flexor strain. Pivetta’s placement was retroactive to Saturday. He last pitched against the Oakland Athletics, pitching five scoreless innings and earning the win. Pivetta, 31, has a 1-1 record with a 0.82 ERA this season.
Story, 31, joined the Red Sox on a six-year, $140 million contract in March 2022 after playing six seasons, including two All-Star campaigns, with the Colorado Rockies. He has appeared in 145 games with the Red Sox, batting .227 with 19 homers and 84 RBIs. In his career with the Rockies, Story hit .272 with 158 home runs, 450 RBIs, and 100 stolen bases.
To replace Pivetta on the roster, the Red Sox recalled left-hander Brennan Bernardino from Triple-A Worcester. Bernardino, 32, has a 2-2 record with a 3.23 ERA in 57 major league games, including six starts, with the Seattle Mariners (2022) and Red Sox (2023).
