The University of Michigan Police department informed the Free Press on Thursday that it has been collaborating with the FBI for several months to investigate the unauthorized computer access incident involving former Michigan football co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss.
In an email statement on Thursday, the police department stated, “The University of Michigan Police Department has partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the Matt Weiss unauthorized computer access incident. Currently, the investigation is extensive, ongoing, and is of the utmost priority. Additional information will be provided when available.”
Matt Weiss, who served as the Michigan quarterbacks coach, was fired by athletic director Warde Manuel in January. However, he has not been arrested in connection with the investigation.
Weiss was initially placed on leave and later terminated after Michigan Police received reports of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall from Dec. 21-23. According to the Michigan Police log, a university employee reported the incident on Jan. 5. Subsequently, reports emerged that authorities were seen at Weiss’ Ann Arbor residence in marked and unmarked vehicles a few days later.
An external investigative firm reached out to the NCAA last week after discovering video footage and files outlining a sign-stealing plan, which has become the latest controversy surrounding Michigan football. However, Michigan Deputy Chief of Police Melissa Overton clarified that the investigation into Weiss is unrelated to the sign-stealing allegation.
The firm’s findings, reported to the NCAA on Oct. 17, implicated suspended Michigan staffer Connor Stalions as the central figure in the alleged operation, involving assistance from several others. The scheme reportedly incurred expenses of nearly $15,000 this season.
The NCAA informed Michigan and the Big Ten last week that an investigation has been initiated. ESPN reported on Thursday that NCAA investigators have been present in Ann Arbor this week regarding the sign-stealing probe.
