“Manu’s Staggering Performance Shatters NRL Record”
Sydney Roosters’ temporary fullback Joseph Manu, who may transition to rugby union by the end of 2024, has now set a new NRL record for the most running meters in a single game.
Filling in for the sidelined James Tedesco in Thursday night’s match against the Newcastle Knights, Manu showcased an exceptional performance from start to finish for the tri-colours.
By the end of the game, Manu had accumulated a remarkable 370 running meters, surpassing the previous record of 369 meters held by Clint Gutherson.
Manu, with a long-standing ambition to secure the fullback position, remains committed to the Sydney Roosters in the NRL, where James Tedesco currently holds the coveted spot. Despite Tedesco’s presence, Manu has seamlessly filled in whenever Tedesco has been absent from the team.
In 2022, Manu showcased his versatility and skill by winning the Golden Boot award while playing at fullback for the New Zealand team during the delayed Rugby League World Cup in England. His outstanding performances during the tournament solidified his status as one of the top talents in the game.
Although Manu has indicated his intention to transition to Japanese rugby union for the next two years before potentially returning to the Roosters, he turned down a lucrative offer from the St George Illawarra Dragons to become their fullback. His loyalty to the Roosters, where he has spent his entire NRL career, remains unwavering.
While Manu’s departure will be a loss for the NRL, his move to Japan may only result in a season and a half absence from the league due to the timing of the Japanese season.
Throughout his NRL journey, the 27-year-old has amassed an impressive record, having played 164 matches since making his debut in 2016.
