“Michigan Defensive Star Shows Promise as Return Threat”

Could a standout cornerback from Michigan provide an additional dimension for the reigning national champions by stepping up as a kick and punt returner?

Standout Michigan defender could also be threat on returns

Will Johnson, highly touted for All-American recognition as he enters his junior year, is honing his skills as a return specialist in preparation for his team’s title defense, commencing on August 31 against Fresno State.

Michigan wide receiver Semaj Morgan, speaking through the Winged Helmet, revealed that alongside himself and Johnson, sophomore defensive back Zeke Berry and sophomore wide receiver Frederick Moore are also practicing returns for the Wolverines. The team’s 2024 spring game is scheduled for April 20.

“Don’t kick to us,” cautioned Morgan.

Johnson, widely regarded as one of the top defensive backs in the Big Ten, is anticipated to be a top selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite teams showing reluctance to throw to his side of the field last season, he managed 20 solo tackles, four passes defended, and four interceptions.

“I believe I’m the premier cornerback in the class. I’m committed to maintaining that status next year,” remarked Johnson in January, as reported by FoxSports.com.

With his exceptional skill set and imposing NFL-ready physique (standing at 6-foot-2, weighing 202 pounds), Johnson draws comparisons to Charles Woodson, the 1997 Heisman Trophy recipient who guided the Wolverines to a national title and a victorious 1998 Rose Bowl outing against Ryan Leaf’s Washington State.

Woodson excelled on both offense and special teams, notably returning punts, including a memorable 77-yard touchdown return against Ohio State.

According to Morgan, as cited by On3.com, Johnson is the “ultimate teammate.”

Now, Johnson could potentially emerge as the Wolverines’ ultimate asset, excelling both as a cornerback and a return specialist.
