Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson has been profoundly affected by his recent suspension for a homophobic slur, according to his coach Ken Hinkley.

During last Friday’s game against Essendon at Adelaide Oval, Finlayson directed the slur at an Essendon opponent, resulting in a three-game suspension.

Hinkley expressed that Finlayson immediately recognized his mistake and was deeply impacted by it. He emphasized Finlayson’s remorse and his desire not to repeat such behavior.

Finlayson took responsibility for his actions by informing club officials of the incident during Saturday’s match and apologized to the Essendon player afterward.

Hinkley commended Finlayson for his handling of the situation, acknowledging his ownership and maturity in addressing the issue.

The coach also emphasized the importance of learning from such incidents and the need to avoid similar behavior in the future.

As a consequence of his suspension, Finlayson will miss upcoming matches against Fremantle, Collingwood, and St Kilda.

The former Greater Western Sydney player will also be required to undergo a Pride in Sport education program, which he will personally finance.

“Jeremy is coping well and is focused on moving forward,” Hinkley assured. “He recognizes the gravity of the situation and the errors made, and he’s handling it in the most appropriate manner possible.”

Hinkley emphasized that derogatory remarks like the one made by Finlayson are not common in today’s game. He highlighted the increased awareness and education among players and staff regarding acceptable behavior on and off the field.

“Our players, along with everyone involved in the sport, have undergone extensive education, not only in this specific area but across the board, to understand the boundaries of acceptable conduct,” he stated.
