Comprehensive Analysis of New York Jets’ Running Back Strategy and Potential Signings
Another Jets Free Agent Signing Is Coming
The New York Jets plan to continue augmenting their roster with seasoned players throughout this offseason, as confirmed by Rich Cimini of ESPN during his recent discussion on “TOJ Talks” with Will Parkinson. Cimini expressed confidence that the Jets will indeed secure the services of a veteran running back, though the precise timing of this acquisition remains uncertain.
‘[The #Jets] will sign a veteran running back, you can count on that,’ Rich Cimini of ESPN told @Willpa11. ‘I’m just not sure when it’ll be.’
Which veteran RB are we adding this offseason to join Breece Hall in the backfield?

Analysis of New York Jets’ Running Back Strategy and NFL Draft Considerations.
Zack Rosenblatt has observed that the New York Jets’ decision not to swiftly incorporate a veteran running back into their lineup is somewhat unexpected. This cautious approach has resulted in missed opportunities, as available options in that position have become limited, as noted by Rosenblatt.
Spotrac data reveals that 24 running backs have secured contracts since the commencement of free agency in March. During an interview on a Syracuse radio show, NFL draft analyst Russell Brown suggested that this surge in signings could be influenced by perceptions of the upcoming draft class in April. Brown highlighted the absence of standout talent among this year’s running back prospects, indicating that it may take some time before the first one is selected.
I think the hardest thing I've had to do in this draft process is rank these running backs. I have 7 running backs ranked from the 54th player on my board to the 78th player on my board.

Brown further elaborated on social media about the challenges of ranking running backs in this draft class, indicating a narrow range of differentiation among prospects.
The current roster of the Jets lists four running backs: Breece Hall, Israel Abanikanda, Jacques Patrick, and Xazavian Valladay.
Rosenblatt emphasized that the Jets’ deliberate approach to acquiring a running back indicates a strong reliance on Breece Hall. Additionally, he suggested that general manager Joe Douglas is considering the possibility of selecting a running back in the draft, potentially after the first round.
Analysis of Potential Veteran Running Back Signings for the New York Jets.
During the “Boy Green Meets Wudi” segment, James Wudi and I discussed our preferences for potential veteran running back signings in the current open market.
Wudi highlighted Kareem Hunt, emphasizing his suitability for the Jets due to his versatility and previous interest from the team in acquiring him via trade. With a relatively low workload throughout his career, Hunt offers potential contributions to both the rushing and passing aspects of the game.
The #Jets still have plenty of holes/depth to fill ahead of the 2024 #NFLDraft. @thejameswudi & I revealed our TOP 5 free agents NYJ should sign over the coming weeks:
🏈 Veteran swing tackle
🏈 Backup center
🏈 Another safety
🏈 Veteran running back
🏈 Another EDGE (why not) pic.twitter.com/TRBlRRI2F6— Paul Andrew Esden Jr (@BoyGreen25) April 10, 2024
In contrast, I advocated for Latavius Murray, recognizing his decade-long experience in the league. Murray’s proficiency as a reliable backup to Breece Hall and his demonstrated leadership qualities were cited as valuable assets.
In a recent Twitter post to my audience of over 17,000 followers, I sought opinions on which running back the fans would prefer the Jets to sign. Responses varied, with suggestions including Boston Scott, JK Dobbins, Rashaad Penny, Ezekiel Elliott, and even Adrian Peterson.
Reflecting on past experiences, such as the significant investment in Dalvin Cook and the disappointment with Le’Veon Bell’s contract, the Jets are approaching the current situation with caution. Rather than seeking a primary playmaker, their focus lies on bolstering their running back depth with a capable addition to share the workload.
