five important insights gained from our game against the Tigers.

1. In today’s game, the midfield often sets the tone. Richmond initially dominated stoppages and clearances, netting four goals early on, with potential for more. However, the Eagles shifted the momentum in this area, led by Elliot Yeo, Tim Kelly, Harley Reid, and Reuben Ginbey.

This turnaround led to opportunities, culminating in a strong finish to the first quarter and an impressive eight-goal second term.

2. Confirming what was evident to the eye, the Eagles convincingly won crucial statistics. They led in contested possessions 144-106, held a significant advantage in clearances at 48-25, and outscored Richmond 10.6 to 4.2 from stoppages.

Key players like Kelly, Yeo, and Reid were influential, with Kelly particularly outstanding, accumulating 29 possessions, eight clearances, and penetrating the forward 50 nine times.

3. The Eagles have maintained high levels of supply in recent matches, surpassing 50 inside 50 entries for the third consecutive game. Against Richmond, they boasted a 61-40 inside 50 differential, a statistic that typically leads to a winning score.

Jake Waterman played a crucial role, marking 13 times, eight of which were inside the 50-metre arc, and contributing significantly with 6.2 goals, including four crucial goals in the first half.

4. The unwavering support of the club’s members and fans, as previously acknowledged, remains unparalleled. Despite a challenging Sunday timeslot and potential difficulties for fans in remote areas, around 48,000 supporters filled the stadium, bringing smiles to faces. The players undoubtedly draw energy from this support, which was evident in their performance, particularly after a slow start.

5. The partnership between Bailey and Jack Williams continues to flourish. In the absence of Matt Flynn, the designated ruck leader, the Williams duo has stepped up admirably.

Bailey handles the bulk of the ruck duties, as he did last season, while Jack provides support and mainly plays forward. Bailey showcased his aerial prowess with strong contested marks, while Jack made a notable impact with a contested grab inside 50 and an important goal in the second quarter.
