Essendon coach Brad Scott has commended Jake Stringer for achieving balance in his personal life and enhancing his fitness, contributing to the Bombers’ promising start to the season.
Stringer, overcoming a lackluster 2023, has emerged as Essendon’s leading goalkicker with 13 majors in five games, notably securing 2.1 in the team’s decisive 29-point victory over the Western Bulldogs last week.
The 29-year-old disclosed in a post-game interview with Channel 7 that he has been exploring the Islamic faith, regularly attending mosques for weekly prayer readings.
Scott emphasized that he respects the personal and religious aspects of his players’ lives, noting that his role primarily involves providing support. He credited Stringer for attaining the “right headspace,” crucial for his resurgence in football performance.
Previously hindered by injuries and poor conditioning, Stringer showcased his potential with a standout 41-goal season in 2021 but faced setbacks in the following two seasons.
Looking ahead, Scott anticipates tough decisions regarding team selection, particularly with Peter Wright’s return from suspension for the Anzac Day clash. Despite Harry Jones’s strong preseason, Scott stressed that players must earn their spots on the team based on performance rather than entitlement.
“Jonesy had his opportunity, and he’s seized it. That’s a testament to his dedication, and it’s a lesson for everyone,” Scott remarked.
“There are no assurances for anyone… Our captain sets the standard in that regard. Each game is played as if it’s your last; there are no free passes.
“The reality is we’re 3-2, not sitting comfortably atop the ladder. We can’t manipulate selections based on individual needs; we must pick the best team to win each game.”
Scott mentioned that Dylan Shiel’s strong performance in the VFL puts him in contention for senior selection, but the Bombers are cautious to ensure his readiness for a permanent return.
He emphasized Shiel’s potential impact at the highest level, citing Dyson Heppell’s resurgence this season as an example.
Regarding player availability, Scott noted Archie Perkins’ recovery from a hamstring injury, hinting at his possible inclusion for the Anzac Day fixture while confirming his absence from the upcoming clash against Adelaide.
He expressed optimism about Matt Guelfi’s (calf) availability for the match against Collingwood in round 7.
