The absence of accountability in the Tybo Rogers case is deeply troubling and disheartening.
In Seattle, this week at the University of Washington has been eventful, to say the least. My profound disappointment stems from what seems to be a complete absence of accountability.
Nine days ago, Huskies running back Tybo Rogers was arrested and charged with two counts of rape allegedly occurring last year. While the new coaching staff promptly suspended Rogers upon learning of the situation, the timeline raises serious concerns. Rogers was sidelined from the Pac-12 Championship Game in December after the first victim filed a Title IX complaint. However, he was allowed to return for the national semifinals and championship game in January.
The recent criminal complaint released by the prosecutor’s office contained new information that prompted the university to take further action. Yet, it’s perplexing why this new information wasn’t addressed earlier, especially considering the severity of the allegations.
Kalen DeBoer’s statement, citing federal privacy laws as a reason for non-disclosure, feels like a dodge. Despite claims of following institutional policies, it’s alarming that there’s no written documentation of discipline for Rogers or reasons for his removal from the travel roster. Additionally, the absence of digital records regarding his status raises more questions than answers.
Former AD Troy Dannen’s silence only adds to the opacity surrounding the situation. According to school policy, any request to lift a student athlete’s administrative suspension during an investigation must be approved by the athletic director. However, it’s unclear if Rogers was ever officially suspended.
The lack of transparency and accountability is not only concerning but also a disservice to the alleged victims who courageously reported the incidents. Moreover, it sends a troubling message to potential future victims.
In essence, this whole ordeal is deeply disappointing. While legal concerns may necessitate caution, it shouldn’t come at the expense of accountability and justice.
