The Edmonton Oilers have experienced a tumultuous 2023-24 season, initially struggling with a 3-9-1 start before implementing changes in coaching staff and goaltending. Despite this rocky start, they have rebounded impressively, clinching second place in the Pacific Division as they head into the postseason.
One standout player who has recently seized an opportunity in the lineup is forward Dylan Holloway. After spending part of the season with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL, Holloway has made an impact since his recall, tallying two goals and two assists in four games. Despite being just 22 years old, Holloway has yet to establish himself firmly in the NHL, often moving between the NHL and AHL. In 18 games with the Condors this season, he recorded ten goals and six assists, while registering five goals and three assists in 36 games with the Oilers.
As the postseason approaches, Holloway’s performance suggests he is hitting his stride at the right time. His return to the lineup coincides with Philip Broberg’s, with both players vying for expanded roles next season. Holloway is expected to feature on the third line alongside Corey Perry and Ryan McLeod, with whom he has developed strong chemistry. This combination of speed and veteran presence should enhance Holloway’s performance and contribute to his growth as a consistent contributor in the middle-six of the Oilers’ lineup.

In September 2021, he endured a three-month absence due to a wrist injury. Subsequently, in October 2022, he suffered a minor upper-body injury, sidelining him for a week. Another setback occurred in February 2023, forcing him to miss nearly a month of action. Although he sustained a wrist injury in October 2023, he returned after a brief absence. Lastly, in November 2023, a knee injury sidelined him for just under two months.
Each time Holloway seemed to find his rhythm, injury setbacks hindered his progress. Despite his considerable skill, his confidence waned due to these recurring injuries. However, upon his recent return, he has showcased a level of play unseen since his NHL debut. With an enhanced two-way game, potent offensive skills, and exceptional speed, he merits consideration for a top-six forward role next season. Additionally, if he elevates his performance further and enhances his offensive output, he may even contend for a first-line spot, allowing the team to distribute its talent more evenly.
As the Oilers await their first-round opponent, Holloway’s contributions will be crucial regardless of the matchup. With Evander Kane experiencing physical and defensive setbacks, Holloway could seize a significant opportunity in the postseason. Looking ahead, he is poised for an expanded role next season, provided he undergoes a productive offseason and bolsters his confidence.
