Masai Ujiri Affirms Commitment to Toronto Raptors Amid Ownership Changes
In the wake of recent shifts in ownership for the Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri has emphasized his dedication to the organization, asserting that it will be “business as usual.”
Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) has appointed Keith Pelley as the new CEO, and while his management style may differ slightly from predecessors Cynthia Devine and Michael Friisdahl, Ujiri remains steadfast in his approach.
Speaking about Pelley’s appointment, Ujiri acknowledged the positive energy and lift he brings to the organization, stressing the importance of a balanced relationship with ownership.
Despite changes at the helm of MLSE, Ujiri asserted that Pelley’s presence will not alter the Raptors’ operations or decision-making processes. Ownership has traditionally maintained a hands-off approach regarding roster matters, a stance expected to continue.
Looking ahead, Ujiri faces a pivotal juncture in 2026 when his current contract aligns with the anticipated divestment of MLSE chairman Larry Tanenbaum. Tanenbaum’s departure could potentially impact Ujiri’s future with the Raptors.
Ujiri emphasized his unwavering focus on his role and responsibilities within the organization, dismissing external perceptions and political dynamics. He expressed gratitude for the support received from ownership, emphasizing his commitment to moving forward without lingering issues.
Since joining the Raptors in 2013, succeeding Bryan Colangelo, Ujiri has played a pivotal role in the organization’s growth and success.
