“Coach Robinson of Roosters Denies Pressuring 27-Year-Old Star to Depart Team”

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson expressed concern that this NRL season might mark the end of Joey Manu’s time with the team, as there’s no agreement for his return following his stint in Japanese club rugby.

Manu is set to depart the Roosters at the conclusion of 2024 after signing a one-year deal with Toyota Verblitz, and he hasn’t committed to staying with his Sydney club beyond that period.

The Tricolours will have skipper James Tedesco returning from concussion for Thursday night’s match against Melbourne, prompting Kiwi international Manu to transition from fullback back to the centres after excelling in the No.1 position during their win over Newcastle.

Robinson expressed deep disappointment at losing Manu, emphasizing his rare ability to excel in multiple positions, which will be sorely missed by the team.

“It’s a significant loss for us and for the game,” said the coach ahead of their clash with the second-placed Storm.

The coach expressed uncertainty about Manu’s return, stating, “I’d like to assume he’ll return here, but there’s currently no indication of that, otherwise I’d feel more optimistic.”

Robinson mentioned that Manu’s move was motivated by personal challenges, including playing the sport he grew up with and experiencing life overseas, which the Roosters couldn’t match.

Manu might aim to become a dual international and pursue a spot in the All Blacks squad ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Regarding other team news, Sam Walker was named in the reserves for the Allianz Stadium match but didn’t pass concussion protocols for his return.

Robinson expressed hope that Walker would be ready for their round-eight clash with St George Illawarra.

On the Melbourne side, Nelson Asofa-Solomona is set to make his first appearance of the season after recovering from a preseason hamstring injury. His return comes at an opportune moment, filling in for Tui Kamikamica, who is sidelined with a calf injury.

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy expressed confidence in Asofa-Solomona’s ability to contribute, emphasizing the need for him to fulfill his role effectively.

The Storm have a strong record against the Roosters, having not lost to them in Sydney since 2019 and winning eight of their past nine encounters. Bellamy hopes Asofa-Solomona can make an impact early in the game.
