The NBA has suspended Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter following an extensive investigation uncovering his involvement in sharing confidential information with bettors and placing bets on league games.
The ongoing investigation has prompted collaboration with federal authorities, including the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI.
Porter’s suspension results from actions that compromised the integrity of NBA games, as emphasized by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “The integrity of our competition is paramount, which is why Jontay Porter’s severe breach necessitates strict consequences,” Silver stated during the announcement.
The league launched its inquiry into Porter in late March after sportsbooks detected irregular betting patterns related to his performance metrics in several games. It was revealed that Porter had disclosed health details to a bettor before a game on March 20 against the Sacramento Kings.
This disclosure led to a significant bet on his underperformance, which was flagged and subsequently withheld by DraftKings due to suspicious circumstances.
Further investigation found that Porter had placed numerous bets on NBA games, totaling $54,094 through an associate’s betting account. While these bets did not involve games in which he participated, they notably included a wager against his own team, the Raptors.
The incident has spurred a broader conversation about the adequacy of current sports betting regulations, with Silver advocating for more robust measures to prevent such occurrences. He suggested the potential restriction of betting options involving players on two-way contracts to further safeguard the sport’s integrity.
In response to these revelations, the Colorado Division of Gaming has reached out to sportsbooks for any additional information on Porter’s betting activities within the state, highlighting the ongoing nature of the investigation.
