The Sydney Roosters are contemplating the possibility of acquiring Dane Gagai, whose contract with the Knights expires at the conclusion of this season.
Gagai, aged 33, has enjoyed a distinguished career in two separate stints with Newcastle, frequently representing Queensland and Australia during his tenure with the club. Reports suggest that Gagai is eager to continue playing, potentially for several more seasons, and is open to considering offers from other clubs.
Presently, the Roosters are internally discussing Gagai as a potential replacement for departing stars Joey Manu and Joseph Suaalii, both of whom are set to transition to rugby union next season.
Should the Roosters opt to pursue Gagai, they will encounter stiff competition, as Newcastle is reportedly keen on retaining him.
Gagai is presently earning a significant salary at the Knights and is likely to be asked to accept a reduction in pay regardless of his destination for the 2025 season and beyond. However, the duration of the contract may sway his decision, as Gagai is keen on securing a multi-year deal for added security.
Earlier this week, Manu confirmed his agreement with the Japanese rugby union club Toyota Verblitz after concluding his tenure with the Roosters this season, eliminating any possibility of persuasion from Trent Robinson or Nick Politis.
Phil Gould expressed his dismay over the loss of Manu on the Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles with Gus podcast this week, labeling it as “devastating” and “tragic,” and suggesting he would have endeavored to involve the superstar more frequently if coaching the Roosters.
Meanwhile, Suaalii’s substantial deal with Super Rugby, which he inked last year, appears poised to proceed following some uncertainty over the past year.
While Gagai would offer valuable reinforcement for the upcoming season, the Roosters are also anticipating the arrival of Wallabies star Mark Nawaqanitawase next season. Nawaqanitawase, a versatile outside back, is capable of slotting into the centres if required by the club.
