“That’s a concern”: The Bulldogs face a significant issue with a “frustrated” star player whose future with the team is uncertain, which is being seen as the “elephant in the room.”

The status of Western Bulldogs’ star player Marcus Bontempelli as a one-club player is increasingly uncertain. Despite his desire to remain loyal to the club, reports suggest that he is hesitant to commit to a new contract too far in advance. Bontempelli, who has been with the Bulldogs since 2013, is currently contemplating his future beyond 2025.

Herald Sun journalist Scott Gullan highlighted this issue on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle, noting that Bontempelli has been holding off on re-signing with the Bulldogs. The captain’s contract expires at the end of 2025, and while discussions have been relatively quiet compared to other players, his situation is a significant concern for the club.

Bontempelli, known for signing short-term deals compared to other star players, last signed a four-year contract in May 2021. Despite his loyalty to the Bulldogs, there are growing concerns about his future, especially if off-field tensions between key personnel, such as coach Luke Beveridge and football director Chris Grant, are not resolved.

While Bontempelli remains committed to pursuing his second AFL premiership with the Bulldogs, the possibility of him leaving the club at the end of 2025 is not ruled out. His exceptional performance this season, averaging 25 disposals, 1.4 goals, and nearly seven clearances per game, has only heightened interest from other clubs.

The Bulldogs’ clash with Essendon tonight is crucial for their short-term prospects, with a win necessary to stay in contention for a top-eight finish.
