Former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, now a staff member, was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, as confirmed by the Ann Arbor Police Department to 247Sports. The 33-year-old Robinson was reportedly involved in a single-vehicle accident before his arrest.
Michigan’s first-year head coach, Sherrone Moore, announced through a statement that Robinson, serving as the assistant director of player personnel, will face an indefinite suspension. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will have no further comment at this time,” Moore stated.
Robinson joined Michigan’s coaching staff in 2022 under former coach Jim Harbaugh and was retained by Moore, who replaced Harbaugh after his departure to the NFL this offseason. Harbaugh led the Wolverines to an undefeated season and their first College Football Playoff National Championship victory in program history.
Before his coaching career, Robinson spent three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars in various roles, including offensive quality control coach and scouting assistant. A native of Deerfield Beach, Florida, Robinson had a successful playing career before transitioning to coaching.
At Michigan, Robinson made his mark from 2009 to 2012. He played sporadically as a freshman before becoming the starting quarterback in his sophomore year. In 2010, he accumulated 4,272 yards of total offense and 32 touchdowns, earning multiple accolades including first-team All-American, first-team All-Big Ten, Big Ten Most Valuable Player, and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.
Robinson’s dual-threat abilities were evident as he posted consecutive seasons with over 1,500 yards passing and 1,500 yards rushing from 2010 to 2011, a feat never achieved before in NCAA history. He also set the NCAA record for most career rushing yards by a quarterback with 4,495, although this record has since been surpassed by Navy’s Keenan Reynolds.
His standout performance led to him being featured on the cover of EA Sports’ NCAA Football 14, released in 2013. Robinson remains Michigan’s all-time leader in single-season total offense, thanks to his remarkable contributions during the 2010 season.
