“Lue and Clippers in Limbo: Leonard’s Round 1 Status Uncertain”

Coach Ty Lue stated that Leonard would not engage in any contact during Saturday’s practice, which served as the team’s final preparation ahead of Sunday’s Game 1 at 3:30 p.m. ET. Leonard has been sidelined since March 31 due to inflammation in his right knee.

Lue mentioned before practice that Leonard had participated in shooting drills the day before and would continue with more movement during Saturday’s session. Additionally, Leonard was expected to take part in some aspects of the practice.

When asked about the possibility of playing Game 1 without Leonard, Lue responded by emphasizing that the team is still uncertain about the star’s availability.

All-Star Paul George acknowledged that the Clippers have faced challenges with injuries in past postseasons, citing last season’s absence of Leonard and George’s own injury during the first-round series against Phoenix.

The Clippers have only had one postseason run with both Leonard and George healthy, which occurred in 2020.

Leonard missed the final eight games of the regular season, and Sunday’s Game 1 will mark three weeks since his last appearance on the court.

Lawrence Frank, the president of basketball operations, provided insight into Leonard’s condition, stating that while his surgically repaired right ACL and right meniscus are structurally sound, the inflammation in his knee has proven to be persistent and unpredictable.

Lue mentioned that he has a contingency plan in mind if Leonard is unable to play in Game 1. He highlighted the team’s performance during Leonard’s absence in April, where they secured wins against Denver, Cleveland, and Phoenix to clinch the fourth seed.

George expressed confidence in Leonard’s commitment to returning to the court, noting his dedication and hard work in rehabilitation. He emphasized Leonard’s desire to be available for the postseason and expressed optimism about his eventual return.
