An insider suggests that the Yankees are considering a potential exchange involving Juan Soto for a projected $225 million slugger.
According to baseball insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees and Mets could potentially execute a unique swap involving star sluggers Pete Alonso and Juan Soto. The scenario involves the Mets signing Soto, who is considered a better all-around hitter and four years younger than Alonso, while the Yankees would then acquire Alonso. This unconventional trade would not be a traditional deal between the two teams, but rather a result of separate signings by each team.
Heyman suggests that while the Mets are pleased with Alonso and intend to re-sign him, they could explore the possibility of signing Soto first. If the Mets were to sign Soto, the Yankees would need to find a replacement, making Alonso a viable option. Despite not being as disciplined a hitter as Soto, Alonso is known for his power at the plate.
Alonso, a three-time All-Star, has been a consistent and productive player throughout his career, with impressive home run and RBI numbers. He has shown durability and reliability, missing few games due to injury. Alonso’s projected contract offers vary, with estimates ranging from a seven-year, $190 million extension to a nine-year, $270 million deal that did not materialize.
In contrast, Soto is projected to receive a considerably larger contract. He has been a standout player for the Yankees, leading the league in walks and on-base percentage, and maintaining a high batting average with multiple home runs and RBIs. Soto’s exceptional performance has led to projections of a 12-year, $408 million contract next winter, with Heyman suggesting that the Yankees may offer an even higher, record-breaking deal to retain him.
