“NHL Playoff Intensity Soars: Edmonton Oilers Brace for Physical Battle Against Los Angeles Kings”

As the NHL playoffs kick into high gear, the intensity on the ice has reached new heights, with hitting up a staggering 69% in the six games played thus far compared to the regular season of 2023-24.

Corey Perry

In the opening game of the 2024 NHL playoffs, the six competing teams averaged 41 hits each, a significant increase from the regular season average of just 24 hits per game. Notably, the Tampa Bay-Florida matchup resembled trench warfare, tallying a total of 109 hits, with both teams engaging in a physical battle.

However, not all teams maintained their regular-season hitting averages in Game One, with the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals falling short. These teams, both on the losing end of their opening games, face an uphill battle as they navigate through the playoffs.

For the Edmonton Oilers, who are set to face the Los Angeles Kings, the surge in hitting serves as a warning sign. In the regular season, the Oilers averaged 22.6 hits per game, ranking 15th in the NHL, while the Kings averaged 21.3 hits per game, ranking 22nd.

Led by players like Dylan Holloway and Evander Kane, the Oilers possess the firepower to match the physicality of their opponents. However, the playoffs often see an increase in hitting from unexpected sources, with star players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl expected to elevate their physical play.

As the Oilers prepare for Game One against the Kings, their focus must be on playing disciplined, defensively sound hockey. Recent playoff disappointments have highlighted the importance of smart decision-making and solid defensive play.

If Edmonton can strike the right balance between aggression and discipline, they stand a strong chance of success against a formidable opponent in the Kings.

Corey Perry

Monday night’s matchup will provide a crucial test for the Oilers, who have struggled in Game One of playoff series in recent years. A commitment to shut-down defense from start to finish will be essential for Edmonton to assert themselves as serious contenders in the 2024 NHL playoffs.

While victory is far from guaranteed, a defensive mindset could make the Oilers a formidable opponent and a tough out in this year’s playoff race. The stage is set for a thrilling showdown between two determined teams, and only time will tell which side will emerge victorious in this battle of attrition.
