Should there be cause for concern regarding the present condition of Kansas football?

Kansas Athletic Director Travis Goff recently provided an update on the ongoing Gateway Project at the University of Kansas, particularly focusing on the renovations to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. This update has raised some concerns among Kansas football fans.

During a discussion with members of Downtown Lawrence Inc. last week, Goff shared several details about the ongoing renovations, including information about seating capacity.

It was mentioned that seating capacity is expected to decrease by approximately 5,000 seats compared to the previous stadium. However, this is not new information, as Goff had previously stated after the official release of the project plans in August 2023 that seating capacity would be reduced but remain above 40,000.

Goff explained to the Downtown Lawrence Inc. crowd that the final seating capacity would depend on what KU decides to do with the east side of the stadium, which is still standing. However, this aspect is not currently part of the renovation plans.

Phase I of the gateway district project includes new constructions to the north, west, and southwest portions of the stadium, as well as upgrades to the Anderson Family Football Complex weight room and locker rooms. This phased approach was outlined in the project plans from the beginning.

The concern arises from the uncertain timeline surrounding Phase II of the project, which was supposed to address the east side of the stadium, along with proposed amenities like a hotel and restaurant. Goff indicated that there is currently no timeline for Phase II and mentioned financial constraints as a factor.

The possibility of having a partially finished stadium for an extended period raises concerns among fans, as it would limit attendance and detract from the overall appeal of the stadium.

However, while the unknown timeline is unsettling, it is not a reason to panic at this point. Goff has built trust with his decisions since becoming athletic director at KU, and fans should remain confident that he will navigate this situation effectively.
