BREAKING:Missouri running back on the verge of joining Kansas City Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs have several ways to enhance their offense in the 2024 NFL Draft, and one strategy that could be overlooked is upgrading the running back position alongside starter Isiah Pacheco. Despite re-signing Clyde Edwards-Helaire, there’s room for another back to make an impact.
Aaron Wilson, the Chiefs have shown interest in Missouri running back Cody Schrader, a late-round prospect.
Schrader, a former walk-on and team captain at Missouri, transferred from Division II Truman State and excelled in the SEC. He visited with the Lions, Raiders, and Chiefs, and attended Kansas City’s local pro day. Whether or not Schrader had a private visit with the Chiefs, he should be on their radar.
Originally from St. Louis, Schrader was a standout in high school but received no offers to play college football. He walked on at Truman State, where he became known for his determination. After an outstanding season, Missouri invited him to use his remaining eligibility with the Tigers. He became a captain and a first-team All-American, setting the school’s single-season rushing record.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, Schrader measured at 5 feet 8 inches and 202 pounds, with a wingspan under 66 inches. His athletic testing results were not exceptional, but his film shows his skills in a zone-run scheme, reading blocks and the defense well, and demonstrating a quick burst and efficient lateral movement.
While Schrader was primarily a runner at Missouri, he showed solid hands as a receiver. However, his short arms may limit his effectiveness in the passing game and pass protection.
For the Chiefs, Schrader could provide depth and a reliable early-down back in their run-pass option playbook. He would need to prove himself on passing downs, where his physical limitations could be a challenge. Despite the doubts he’s faced, Schrader could use another opportunity to prove himself at the next level.
