Report Card for the Detroit Red Wings at Season’s End

Another season, another summer break for the Detroit Red Wings. It’s time to evaluate the team’s performance with final grades.

Despite a thrilling end to the season and notable improvement from the previous year, the 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings fell short of making the playoffs yet again. This marks eight consecutive years without a playoff appearance, the longest drought in the franchise’s history.

The ‘Yzerplan’ Continues to Evolve

The Red Wings finished the season with a record of 41-32-9, their highest number of wins and points since the 2015-16 season when they last made the playoffs. Under the leadership of Steve Yzerman, the team has seen improvement over his five-year tenure.

However, they have yet to secure a playoff berth during his tenure. While Yzerman’s draft picks, including Lucas Raymond and Mo Seider, have shown promise, both are now restricted free agents, posing a challenge for the team’s salary cap. Despite tempered expectations, Yzerman expressed hope for playoff contention in the upcoming season.

Coach Derek Lalonde bears some responsibility for the team’s late-season collapse, as they squandered a nine-point lead for a wildcard spot in February 2024. Although the team showed overall improvement compared to the previous season, Lalonde’s coaching came under scrutiny during crucial moments.

Defensive Struggles Persist

The Red Wings’ defensive performance was subpar, ranking 24th in goals against per game according to Steve Yzerman. Addressing defensive shortcomings will be a priority for the team moving forward.

Youth Represents Hope

The absence of captain Dylan Larkin due to injury underscored his importance to the team’s success. While Larkin’s contributions were significant, the team’s offense relied heavily on him. Emerging talents like Lucas Raymond and Michael Rasmussen offer promise, but overall offensive depth remains a concern.

Mixed Results in Goaltending

The goaltending trio of Alex Lyon, Ville Husso, and James Reimer delivered mixed results. Lyon emerged as a reliable option, while Husso’s inconsistency raises questions about his future with the team.

Bright Future Ahead

The Red Wings’ young talent, including Simon Edvinsson, Moritz Seider, and Lucas Raymond, offers hope for the future. With significant cap space available, Yzerman has the opportunity to secure key signings and bolster the team’s long-term prospects. Despite the challenges, fans can remain optimistic about the team’s potential for success in the seasons to come.
