Fremantle Dockers’ highly touted recruit, Cooper Simpson, is set to make his AFL debut against the Western Bulldogs.
Fremantle’s first-round pick from last year’s draft, the dynamic forward Cooper Simpson, is set to make his AFL debut in Saturday night’s game against the Western Bulldogs. The announcement came from the Dockers on Thursday afternoon, following their third consecutive loss in the recent western derby.
Alongside Simpson’s debut, there are expectations of several lineup changes for Fremantle, with Sam Switkowski and Michael Frederick also potentially returning to the side. However, key forward Jye Amiss will be sidelined due to concussion.
Simpson, who hails from the Dandenong Stingrays, was selected with pick 35 in last year’s draft and was regarded as a steal despite an injury-plagued season. Expressing his excitement, Simpson shared his jubilation upon hearing the news and the overwhelming support from his teammates and family.

His debut also marks the return of Fremantle’s iconic jumper number, as Simpson will wear No. 29, previously worn by club legend Matthew Pavlich. Reflecting on this honor, Simpson expressed gratitude for Pavlich’s mentorship and support.
The Dockers trained at Cottesloe Beach in preparation for the Len Hall Game on Saturday night. Simpson has showcased his talent in three league games for the club’s WAFL affiliate Peel Thunder, notably performing well in the previous week’s win over West Coast’s reserves.
Coach Justin Longmuir revealed that Simpson was considered for last week’s derby but was given additional time in the reserves after recovering from COVID. Simpson endeared himself to Fremantle fans during the draft night interview by expressing his desire to remain with the club for his entire career, emphasizing his loyalty and commitment.
Fremantle traded up in the draft to secure Simpson with their top pick, choosing him over other clubs like Geelong and Collingwood.
