Tapping believes the high-pressure Bombers dominate amidst unpredictable shifts in momentum.

Assistant Coach Dale Tapping sees Essendon’s capacity to halt Collingwood’s momentum as a significant positive from their Anzac Day draw.

Despite Essendon initially establishing a five-goal lead in the first quarter, Collingwood gradually gained the upper hand in what became a back-and-forth battle at the MCG.

With momentum shifting dramatically throughout the game, resulting in three significant lead changes, the match ultimately ended in a thrilling tie.

Although feeling somewhat disappointed with the draw, Tapping believes the Bombers can draw confidence from their ability to prevent Collingwood, the reigning Premiers, from capitalizing on their comeback – something Collingwood successfully executed against Port Adelaide in the previous round.

“What we take away from today is the game’s multiple momentum shifts. We experienced both gaining and losing momentum several times throughout the match – that builds confidence,” Tapping shared with essendonfc.com.au’s The Last Word.

“Sometimes you have to win the game three times in one match; that’s the immediate challenge. Collingwood always keeps pressing, so it’s pleasing to see we can counter their momentum and fight back.”

Another encouraging aspect for Essendon’s coaching staff was the fluidity of ball movement from the midfield to the forward line. The Bombers’ ability to generate 55 inside 50s resulting in 25 scoring shots indicated promising offensive improvement.

Coupled with Essendon’s strong presence around the ball, Tapping believes these areas will serve the team well throughout the season.

“It all starts in the contest. Our midfielders were outstanding and provided us with first use of the ball,” Tapping remarked.

“Even with first possession, efficiently transitioning into the forward line is a challenge for every team, and we managed it exceptionally well, particularly in the first quarter.

“Our intent was commendable. Despite the game’s fluctuations after our impressive start, our commitment to our style of play and system implementation is a positive sign, albeit with a somewhat disappointing draw.”
