An offensive lineman from Michigan, who played a key role in the Wolverines’ national title win, has signed with an NFL team.
After earning a starting spot late in Michigan’s national championship campaign, offensive lineman Trente Jones made a bold move by declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite not being selected, the five-year Wolverine signed as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. This opportunity gives Jones a chance to compete for a roster spot with the four-time Super Bowl champions.
Jones arrived at Michigan as a highly rated four-star prospect. He redshirted in 2019 and played in just one game in 2020 before making his mark in the 2021 season. During that season, he appeared in all 14 games with two starts, primarily at right tackle and as a sixth lineman in jumbo formations. Jones won the starting right tackle position in the lead-up to the 2022 season, starting the first six games until an injury sidelined him, leading to a backup role for the remainder of the season.
In 2023, Jones continued to be used as a sixth lineman in heavy formations but emerged as the starting right tackle late in the season after Zak Zinter’s injury. He started in key games against Iowa, Alabama, and Washington, contributing to Michigan’s national championship victory. Jones’s impressive performances in crucial moments prompted his decision to enter the NFL Draft.
Despite his limited snap count in 2023 due to his role in heavy sets, Jones impressed in both run and pass blocking, with no sacks allowed and only one quarterback hurry, according to PFF. His athleticism, solid footwork, and technique make him a promising prospect. Additionally, his academic achievements, including being a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree with degrees in Creative Writing and Literature, and a Master’s degree from the School of Social Work, demonstrate his well-roundedness and dedication.
Now, Jones looks to transition his success at Michigan to the NFL as he aims to make his mark in professional football.
