“Understanding Cardinals Fans’ Hesitation in Labeling 34-Year-Old as an Ace Pitcher”

The 2023 season took an emotional toll on many St. Louis Cardinals fans. Some may find it easier to keep their expectations low rather than risk being disappointed again by the team’s performance. However, it’s perplexing how many within Cardinals Nation still resist acknowledging Sonny Gray as an ace, or a number one starter, despite his impressive qualities.

Part of the issue might stem from differing definitions of what constitutes an “ace.” There’s no doubt that Sonny Gray qualifies as a top-tier starter who can lead a team in a playoff series and hold his own against the best pitchers in the league. His performance in the 2024 season so far provides ample evidence of his prowess.

Looking at Gray’s stats from 2024, his stellar 1.04 ERA in his initial three starts ranks among the best in the league, despite limited pitching opportunities due to injury recovery. His ability to generate strikeouts further underscores his effectiveness on the mound.

Reviewing his performance in 2023 adds to the narrative of Gray’s dominance. Finishing second in American League Cy Young voting, Gray showcased impressive numbers across the board, solidifying his status as one of the game’s elite pitchers.

Examining his track record since 2019 further bolsters Gray’s case as an ace. Consistently posting strong ERA and FIP figures, along with All-Star appearances and Cy Young consideration, Gray has established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the mound.

Even when considering his entire career, Gray’s accomplishments speak for themselves. Despite perhaps being underrated by some, his consistent performance places him among the top pitchers in the league, with statistics comparable to those of future Hall of Famers.

So why the reluctance among Cardinals fans to acknowledge Gray’s ace status? Some may be influenced by initial perceptions or simply undervalue his contributions. However, Gray’s consistent excellence on the field merits recognition, and it’s time for fans to embrace him as the ace the team needs.

As the season progresses, Gray’s performances will continue to demonstrate his worthiness of the title. With him leading the rotation, the Cardinals have a genuine ace capable of competing with the best in the league.
