The NBA Mock Draft predicts that two basketball players from Kansas Jayhawks will be selected towards the end of the first round.
In recent years, the Kansas basketball program has seen several of its players make it to the NBA. Notably, Gradey Dick and Ochai Agbaji were lottery picks in the last two drafts, showcasing the program’s ability to develop top talent. Despite this, the Jayhawks are poised for continued success even if their current draft prospects aren’t as highly touted.
Among these prospects are super-senior guard Kevin McCullar and freshman wing Johnny Furphy. According to a recent mock draft by On3’s James Fletcher III, both former KU standouts are projected to be selected in the latter stages of the first round. McCullar is predicted to go 23rd overall to the Milwaukee Bucks, while Furphy is slated to be picked 27th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Fletcher’s mock draft, like many others, places the duo very close together in terms of draft selection, highlighting their competitiveness. Some drafts even suggest the possibility of consecutive picks for the Jayhawks. Barring any setbacks at the NBA Draft Combine, neither player is expected to slip past the early stages of the second round.
McCullar showcased his offensive prowess this past season, leading the Big 12 with an average of 18.3 points per game, along with 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.5 steals. Previously with Texas Tech, he transferred to Kansas and further developed his game over two years in Lawrence.
Furphy emerged as a promising prospect in the latter part of the season, averaging 11.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.5 three-pointers per game after earning a spot in the starting lineup in January. Standing at 6-foot-9, he possesses the length and shooting ability to fit the mold of a versatile 3-and-D wing in the NBA.
However, there are concerns that might deter pro scouts from fully endorsing these prospects. McCullar’s absence from the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments due to a knee injury spanning over two months raises questions about his durability. On the other hand, Furphy’s draft stock took a hit following a late-season slump, despite initially being considered a potential lottery pick in some mock drafts.
Furphy is likely to opt for a one-and-done route, although he still has the option to return to Kansas. Recent activity in the transfer portal suggests the coaching staff is preparing for his departure. While neither McCullar nor Furphy are expected to blossom into star players immediately, they possess the potential to become valuable role players with the right development and opportunities.
