Arber Xhekaj made a polished appearance before the media ahead of the Canadiens’ last game at the Bell Centre on April 16th. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound defenseman, sporting a fresh haircut and a custom-tailored green suit with a black turtleneck, was noticeably in a sling, recovering from a shoulder operation six days earlier.
With Xhekaj’s restricted free agency approaching, attention turns to the duration and value of his next contract, amid concerns about his shoulder health following last season’s surgery on his right shoulder.
Despite his shoulder issues, the 23-year-old defenseman is optimistic about his readiness for the upcoming season’s training camp, asserting confidence in his strengthened shoulders moving forward.

Xhekaj, who signed a three-year, US$2.485 million contract three years ago, expressed gratitude for his NHL opportunity and aspirations to support his parents’ retirement through his career earnings. His left shoulder, a recurring concern since his junior years, prompted the recent operation after his right shoulder’s prior surgery.
Although hampered by his left shoulder this season, Xhekaj persevered, determined to contribute, especially after being sidelined for 51 games last season. Despite challenges, he finished the season strongly, showcasing his defensive prowess alongside veteran David Savard.
While acknowledging the physical toll of his style of play on his shoulders, Xhekaj remains confident in their repair, eager to resume his physical game. His stint in the AHL with partner Logan Mailloux displayed promising chemistry, offering potential for the Canadiens’ defensive lineup.
Reflecting on the season’s trials, Xhekaj emphasized the importance of cherishing each day and remaining present, a valuable lesson learned amidst his journey.
