“Collingwood President: Having No Stance is Equivalent to Standing for Nothing in this Game”

Tasmania is poised to become the latest addition to the AFL roster in 2028, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of Australian Rules Football across the country.

However, as the league prepares for its 19th club to enter the fray, former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has raised concerns about the uneven number of teams. McGuire suggests that some current AFL presidents are dissatisfied with this imbalance, signaling North Melbourne as a potential casualty.

McGuire advocates for the AFL to relocate North Melbourne to northern Victoria, specifically areas such as Mickleham through to Whittlesea, encompassing Kalkallo, Beveridge, Donnybrook, and Wollert. He warns that failure to expand North Melbourne’s influence could result in the club being axed from the competition altogether.

In McGuire’s view, the introduction of the Tasmania Devils should prompt the AFL to establish the state as the primary base for the new team, necessitating the relocation of North Melbourne. He proposes that big clubs should play matches in Tasmania to build excitement and support for the upcoming franchise.

Despite McGuire’s assertions, discussions about a potential 20th team have already begun. Reports suggest that SANFL side Norwood has expressed interest in joining the league to even out the number of teams.

League CEO Andrew Dillon acknowledges the eventual growth to 20 teams but emphasizes the importance of timing and market readiness. He highlights the strong demand for a Tasmanian team and the league’s focus on fostering support in the region.

While McGuire’s proposal sparks debate about the future of the AFL, various expansion possibilities are being explored. The Northern Territory, Western Australia, North Queensland, and Canberra emerge as potential growth areas, with Darwin garnering significant support among club captains surveyed.

As the AFL navigates these discussions and plans for further expansion, the league’s commitment to broadening its reach and ensuring strategic growth remains paramount.
