Joseph Manu is set to bid farewell to the Sydney Roosters at the conclusion of the 2024 NRL season, as the club officially announced his move to Japanese rugby union.

As initially disclosed by The Roar, the former Golden Boot awardee will join Toyota Verblitz starting next season, with coach Trent Robinson acknowledging Manu’s desire for a new challenge abroad.

“Joey has expressed his interest in experiencing life overseas with his young family and playing in a different setting, so while his departure saddens us, we fully endorse his decision,” said Robinson.

Manu, a stalwart of the Roosters, will be dearly missed but remains a cherished member of the team. Robinson expressed optimism for the upcoming season, stating, “Joey will always be a Rooster. He is resolute in his goals for this season, and we eagerly anticipate the journey ahead.”

Joining Toyota Verblitz will see Manu alongside esteemed All Blacks mentors Steve Hansen and Ian Foster, with Foster reuniting with his longtime New Zealand colleague.

The prospect of Manu potentially donning the All Blacks jersey in the future is enhanced by the invaluable mentorship provided by Hansen and Foster, who played integral roles in Sonny Bill Williams’ successful transition to rugby union, culminating in two World Cup victories.

Manu’s shift marks the second key departure from the Roosters backline, following Joseph Suaalii’s decision to join the NSW Waratahs. However, the Roosters have secured Mark Nawaqanitawase as part of the swap, opting for a fresh challenge in rugby league.

Reflecting on his departure, Manu expressed gratitude for his time at the Roosters and acknowledged the tough decision to leave the club and the NRL. “While I’m eager to embrace the new challenge in Japan, my focus remains on finishing this season strongly and delivering my best for the Roosters,” he remarked.

Manu’s departure leaves three backline spots open for next season, with speculation surrounding the future of Daniel Tupou, the club’s record tryscorer. Despite the changes, James Tedesco will continue to lead the team, with Dominic Young and Billy Smith emerging as potential replacements in the backline. The Roosters may explore the market for additional reinforcements as they strive for continued success.
