Darren Lockyer Dismisses Premature Speculation on Sam Walker’s Possible Move to Broncos

Queensland rugby league icon Darren Lockyer has cautioned against premature discussions regarding the potential relocation of Sam Walker back to Brisbane, emphasizing his belief that the talented player is likely to remain with the Roosters for the duration of his career. Walker, who showcased his prowess during the Roosters’ commanding victory over the Dragons on Anzac Day, is presently under contract with the Roosters until the culmination of 2025.

As the contract of veteran Broncos playmaker Adam Reynolds expires concurrently, there may arise temptation within Brisbane’s ranks to pursue the services of the youthful halfback, who originates from Queensland. Having emerged from the Broncos’ junior ranks before affiliating with the Roosters in 2019, the 21-year-old represents a promising prospect for his home state.

Amidst discussions concerning potential successors to Reynolds in the halves, the Broncos possess viable options and depth, notably including 24-year-old Jock Madden, who is contracted until 2026. Lockyer, also serving as a board member for the Broncos, acknowledged the emergence of teenage academy talent such as Coby Black, expressing confidence in the club’s current roster makeup.

Acknowledging the retirement of esteemed five-eighth Luke Keary at the conclusion of the current season, esteemed league figure Wally Lewis concurred with Lockyer’s sentiment, suggesting that it would be unlikely for the Roosters to permit their talented halfback to depart when the market opens on November 1st. Emphasizing the Roosters’ reputation as a professional outfit committed to retaining key assets, Lockyer and Lewis underscored the club’s penchant for nurturing and retaining promising talent.

The impending clash between Reynolds and his potential successor, Walker, is poised to unfold on Friday night as the Broncos square off against the Roosters at Suncorp Stadium.
