Sydney Swans’ Chad Warner Responds to GWS’ Sam Taylor “smug” and “chirpy” Comments Ahead of 27th Sydney Derby

Sydney’s rising star, Chad Warner, has responded to the recent remarks of GWS player Sam Taylor, who labeled the Swans as “smug” and “chirpy” ahead of the upcoming Sydney Derby.

Since its inception in 2012, the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ has consistently delivered intense matchups, and anticipation is high for the 27th installment set to unfold at the SCG this Saturday.

On Monday, All-Australian defender Taylor criticized Sydney for their vocal presence during a pre-season game, attributing a sense of arrogance to the second-placed team.

However, when questioned on Wednesday, Warner brushed off any animosity towards Taylor’s comments, acknowledging that such banter is a natural element of the game.

Warner stated, “I don’t believe we exhibit more chirpiness than other teams. Such exchanges are common in derbies and rivalries.”

He added, “It’s a facet of the game that we embrace, which contributes to the excitement of AFL.”

Regarding Taylor’s remarks, Warner emphasized, “He’s entitled to his opinion as an established player in the league.”

Expressing respect for the Giants as formidable opponents, Warner eagerly anticipated the showdown on Saturday.

Connor Idun, Taylor’s teammate, acknowledged the rivalry between the two teams but played down Taylor’s comments, attributing them to Taylor’s communication style rather than a genuine reflection of sentiment.

Idun expressed confidence in Taylor, along with Greene and Coniglio, who are expected to return to action despite recent time off due to suspension and injury.

Sydney is poised to welcome back Luke Parker, a five-time Brett Kirk medallist, for his first game of the season after an impressive performance in the VFL last weekend.

Coach John Longmire may make strategic adjustments considering the Swans’ shorter turnaround compared to the Giants, although Warner minimized the impact, emphasizing the team’s diligent recovery efforts.

Warner highlighted the significance of the derby for Parker, suggesting that Longmire faces tough decisions regarding team selection.

The highly anticipated clash between Sydney and GWS is scheduled to commence at 1:45 pm (AEST) at the SCG.
