Every MLB team makes numerous moves each season, many of which go unnoticed by most fans. One such inconspicuous transaction by the Philadelphia Phillies last year may have deprived them of a potential future closer.
Philadelphia designated pitcher James McArthur for assignment a year ago, effectively ending his tenure with the organization after being drafted in the 12th round of the 2018 MLB Draft. However, he never made it to the Majors with the Phillies.
However, a few days after his May 4 designation, the Phillies traded him to Kansas City for minor-league outfielder Junior Marin and the $100,000 waiver price.
The Athletic recently shed light on why the Royals made this move. The pitching coaches, both at the Major League club and within the organization, were all in their inaugural season with the Royals. General manager J.J. Picollo stated that it was the first time the entire staff unanimously recommended acquiring McArthur.
The Royals made a significant adjustment to McArthur’s pitching approach, particularly altering the shape of his breaking ball. During his time in the minors, he accumulated an 11-22 record with a 4.33 ERA, primarily serving as a starter for the Phillies. However, with the Royals, he transitioned into a full-time relief role.
Upon his promotion to the Majors in August, McArthur concluded the season with 16.1 scoreless innings, along with four saves in four opportunities.
This season, McArthur has emerged as one of the top closers in the American League, boasting a 1-0 record with a 2.63 ERA in 12 appearances. He has successfully converted all seven save opportunities, striking out 15 batters while issuing only two walks in 13.2 innings.
Perhaps a change of scenery was what McArthur needed, a phenomenon that has benefitted numerous players over the years.
The Phillies currently have four players who have recorded saves this season, with José Alvarado leading the pack with five.
Only time will tell if the Phillies will regret letting go of McArthur.
