Simpson confirms substitute player for Essendon match, provides reasoning for midfielder’s absence.

West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson has shed light on midfielder Dom Sheed’s absence from the team’s Round 8 lineup. Sheed, who had been serving as the tactical substitute in the past two matches, was not selected for this game due to a need for full-game fitness after a challenging start to the 2024 season marked by a foot injury.

Despite his recent appearances, Sheed struggled to make a significant impact in the limited time he played. Simpson emphasized the importance of Sheed getting a full game under his belt to improve his fitness. The Eagles’ current midfield balance also factored into the decision to place Sheed back in the WAFL side.

Simpson expressed confidence that Sheed will soon return to the senior lineup, highlighting the player’s desire to play full games and regain form after a lengthy absence. Simpson also mentioned the team’s midfield composition, which includes a mix of youth and experience, as a reason for Sheed’s omission.

In addition to Sheed, Tyler Brockman and Harry Edwards were also omitted from the squad for the game against Essendon. Defender Jayden Hunt will miss at least one game due to knee, back, and toe issues.

To fill the gaps, young players Noah Long and Harley Reid have been included in the squad, along with debutant Harvey Johnson, who has shown promise since joining the team.

Simpson confirmed that Johnson will serve as the substitute for his debut match, praising the teenager’s understanding of the game and his skill set. Despite Johnson’s early entry into the team, Simpson expressed satisfaction with his progress and readiness to contribute.

Simpson expressed optimism about midfielder Elliot Yeo recommitting to the West Coast Eagles beyond the current season. Yeo, who is in top form and eligible for free agency in 2024, has reportedly attracted interest from other clubs due to his strong performance this season.

While there are rumors that West Coast has not yet made an offer to Yeo, Simpson seemed to dismiss these suggestions, indicating that an offer may already be with Yeo or in the process of being finalized.

“We’re working through that. From all reports he wants to stay, and we want to keep him. I’m hoping that’s just a matter of time,” Simpson said, implying that both the club and Yeo are keen on extending their relationship.

Simpson’s comments suggest that West Coast is actively working on securing Yeo’s future at the club, and both parties are positive about reaching an agreement.
