“Veteran Star Draws on Military Experience as First-Round Pick on the Gridiron”
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats raised eyebrows among analysts during the CFL National Draft as they opted to select left tackle Nathaniel Dumoulin-Duguay from Laval with their first-round pick. Despite the surprise, General Manager Ed Hervey clarified that Dumoulin-Duguay was deemed the most prepared player to contribute to a CFL lineup immediately, hence the decision.
Dumoulin-Duguay’s collegiate career at Laval saw limited action due to the cancellation of the COVID season and a high-ankle sprain in 2021.
However, he showcased his talent by clinching a Vanier Cup ring in 2022 and excelling at the CFL Combine as the most versatile offensive lineman. His outstanding performance in various drills, including the 40-yard dash and broad jump, solidified his position as a top prospect.
In an interview with Ticats Today on the Ticats Audio Network, Dumoulin-Duguay reflected on his unique journey to professional football, which included a brief stint in the military. He recounted how academic challenges led him to explore alternative paths, ultimately leading to his enrollment in the army.
Despite the demanding nature of basic training, Dumoulin-Duguay embraced the discipline and mental fortitude instilled by the experience, which he believes has prepared him well for the rigors of football.
When asked about his transition to the CFL and joining the Tiger-Cats, Dumoulin-Duguay expressed excitement about the opportunity to learn from seasoned teammates and contribute to the team’s success. While acknowledging his versatility and readiness to adapt, he acknowledged the strength and depth of the team’s Canadian offensive line, citing David Beard, Brandon Revenberg, and Coulter Woodmansey as formidable peers.
With Dumoulin-Duguay’s arrival, the Tiger-Cats aim to bolster their offensive line and capitalize on his potential to make an impact on the field. As he prepares to embark on this new chapter of his football career, Dumoulin-Duguay’s determination and versatility position him as a promising addition to the team’s roster.
