Collingwood Eyes Western Bulldogs Forward Rory Lobb

Collingwood has emerged as a potential suitor for Western Bulldogs forward Rory Lobb, who currently finds himself behind Aaron Naughton, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, and Sam Darcy in the pecking order. The Pies, in their quest for a key forward since Travis Cloke’s departure in 2015, remain eager to bolster their depth despite recruiting Brody Mihocek from the VFL in 2018 and acquiring Dan McStay from Brisbane before the 2023 season.

Lobb has made just three appearances this season under the leadership of Luke Beveridge, who has delineated the club’s future direction. According to SEN reporter Michaelangelo Rucci, Collingwood is poised to make a move for the 31-year-old.

“If I were to project to the end of this year, Rory Lobb would be at Collingwood,” stated Rucci. “I’ve received information indicating that Collingwood intends to approach his management.”

A potential departure from the Bulldogs would mark Lobb’s fourth AFL club, following stints at GWS and Fremantle before his tenure with the Bulldogs. Drafted by the Giants with Pick 29 in the 2013 National Draft, Lobb eventually requested a trade back to his home state after five years.

Despite his limited game time this season, Lobb’s versatility as a forward-ruck has been noted. Beveridge expressed confidence in Lobb’s capabilities, emphasizing his potential for longevity in the game.

“As a player in his early 30s, Rory Lobb has ample years ahead of him,” Beveridge remarked. “He possesses the attributes for a sustained career, and I believe he can contribute significantly to our club.”

Collingwood’s reported interest in Lobb coincides with the looming conclusion of Mason Cox’s career, while Mihocek and McStay are also approaching the latter stages of their careers. Cox, aged 33, transitioned to football a decade ago, and McStay has played a modest 14 games for Collingwood, missing out on the club’s record-equalling 16th premiership.

In AFL history, notable players who have represented four clubs include Tom Hickey and Ben Hudson, while Dale Kickett notably played for five clubs during his career.
