Red Sox Receive Positive Update Regarding Designated Infielder

Last week, the Boston Red Sox made a significant roster adjustment by acquiring Zack Short, a utility infielder from the New York Mets, for their 26-man roster. Short’s arrival prompted a corresponding move for the team, leading to the designation of veteran Pablo Reyes.

When a player is designated for assignment, there’s always uncertainty about whether they will clear waivers and remain with the organization, as other teams have the opportunity to claim them for their own roster needs.

Fortunately for Boston, Reyes cleared waivers and agreed to an outright assignment to Triple-A Worcester, as reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com on Monday. Reyes, aged 30, will now join the WooSox and continue with the organization as a non-40-man roster player.

While Reyes performed well with the Red Sox in 2023, batting .287 with two home runs and 20 RBI, his production waned at the beginning of this season. The infielder struggled at the plate, posting a slash line of .183/.234/.217 with two doubles and five RBI, along with a BAbip of .268 and a hard-hit rate of 31.7%.

In addition to his offensive struggles, Reyes faced challenges defensively, primarily playing at third base (11 games) and second base (nine games). At third base, he struggled with a .852 fielding percentage and committed four errors, whereas at second base, he displayed better performance with a flawless fielding percentage, no errors, and two double plays turned.

The Red Sox are optimistic that Reyes can refine his swing and regain his form in Triple-A, recognizing the potential need for his services later in the season.
