West Coast Coach Adam Simpson Discusses Contract Extension Talks with No.1 Draft Pick…

West Coast coach Adam Simpson has acknowledged ongoing discussions between the club and No.1 draft pick Harley Reid regarding a potential contract extension, affirming that such talks are underway. However, Simpson has emphasized that he isn’t directly involved in these negotiations, prioritizing the teenager’s well-being.

Reid’s name has already surfaced in connection with interest from rival clubs, with Essendon mentioned as one to watch amid speculation about a potential pursuit of the Tongala junior. Despite having played only seven games, the 19-year-old is contracted with West Coast until the end of the 2026 season, initially signing a three-year deal alongside last year’s top 20 draft selections.

Since the conclusion of Round 6, clubs and first-year players have had the opportunity to extend these contracts, prompting attention on whether West Coast can secure Reid beyond his current deal. Amidst swirling speculation about Reid’s future, Simpson has sought to downplay the constant chatter surrounding the young star’s contract status.

“We haven’t really delved into it,” the premiership coach remarked on AFL 360. “Seven games in… I understand it’s a major talking point, and there are rumors and speculation, but we’re talking about a 19-year-old potentially signing a $20 million deal over 10 years. That’s not our focus at this stage. We’re simply aiming to ensure the young player enjoys his game and thrives as an AFL player. That’s where our focus lies at the moment.

“Conversations are indeed taking place, but they’re not being facilitated through me.”

The Eagles are hopeful that their improved performance this season under Simpson signals a promising future for Reid in Perth while bolstering the club’s ability to attract talent from across the country. As one of the league’s premier clubs, West Coast’s planned rebuild hinges on acquiring talent, both locally and from interstate. Simpson believes that a combination of the club’s resources and improved form will support any recruitment efforts during the offseason.

“We typically pursue Western Australians who we didn’t draft,” Simpson quipped. “That trend probably won’t change. We’re a big club with a supporter base exceeding 100,000 members and have robust resources – both in football and post-football. We’ve always been an appealing destination.

“In recent years, our on-field performances may not have reflected that, but there’s certainly optimism now. With a more competitive brand of football this season, we aim to take our members on the journey with us, which we hope will also attract talent.”

sitting 15th on the ladder and lacking a third-round selection in this year’s draft, West Coast’s draft hand consists of Picks Currently4, 24, and 60.
