The transfer portal has closed, and overall, West Virginia has emerged in a relatively positive position. While the Mountaineers saw the departure of key players like wide receiver EJ Horton and cornerback Montre Miller, they were largely able to retain the core of their roster.
Now, attention shifts to identifying and addressing the remaining needs. Head coach Neal Brown mentioned, “We’ll look to add some pieces potentially in May.”
With only a few open scholarships remaining, the focus is primarily on bolstering the defensive backfield, particularly at cornerback and safety. Despite the addition of Charlotte cornerback Dontez Fagan, the departure of Miller and the spring injury to Jacolby Spells highlight the need for further depth in that area.
On offense, the loss of deep threat Horton creates a vacancy at wide receiver. West Virginia may seek to add speed or a larger outside option to compensate for his absence. The coaching staff is actively exploring options, including at tight end, where they hosted junior college prospect Gregory Genross.
Depth on the defensive line is also a consideration, especially given health concerns with players like Corey McIntyre and Asani Redwood. While Redwood is expected to return for the fall, adding another versatile and experienced piece could address any lingering concerns.
Additionally, West Virginia may consider adding a young pass rusher on defense and bolstering the offensive line for future seasons, though these aren’t immediate priorities.
