Breaking News: Sydney Roosters face the loss of a 32 year old vital star player.
Approaching the conclusion of his contract with the Sydney Roosters, seasoned winger Daniel Tupou has emerged as a potential transfer target for another club.
A mainstay in the team’s backline since making his debut in Round 24, 2012, Tupou stands just two games away from reaching the milestone of 250 first-grade appearances for the Roosters. He played a pivotal role in the club’s triumphs, contributing to three premierships in 2013, 2018, and 2019.
Tupou’s impact extends to the representative arena, where he has represented Tonga in 18 Tests and donned the NSW Blues jersey in ten matches, including the recent 2022 State of Origin series.
With advancing years and the Roosters focusing on nurturing younger talents like Billy Smith, Tupou finds himself without a contract for the upcoming season, as his current deal expires at the end of 2024.
Reports from French publication L’Independant suggest that the Catalan Dragons, a Super League team, have shown interest in securing Tupou’s services for the next season.
While no official announcement has been made regarding Tupou’s future with the Roosters, speculations are rife, particularly amid rumors of retirement alongside teammates Luke Keary and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves at the season’s end.
Last year, Tupou expressed his deep attachment to the Roosters, stating, “I cherish every opportunity I get to represent the Sydney Roosters. I love this club and the people in it.” However, as he ponders over his future, uncertainty looms over whether he will continue playing next year.
As the Roosters prepare for the upcoming season, they have confirmed four departures, with 11 players yet to secure contracts beyond the current season. Notable names among those without contracts include Angus Crichton and Joseph Suaalii, alongside others like Zach Dockar-Clay, Michael Jennings, Lewis Murphy, Ethan Roberts, Blake Steep, and Alex Young.
