Breaking News: Sunset for Vogel: Phoenix Suns Dismiss Coach After…
PHOENIX (AP) — Frank Vogel’s brief stint as head coach of the Phoenix Suns has come to an end following a disappointing season that culminated in a playoff series sweep.
The Suns announced on Thursday the dismissal of the 50-year-old Vogel, just under two weeks after the team was eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
“After a thorough evaluation of the season, we determined that a change in leadership was necessary for our team,” stated Suns general manager James Jones. “We appreciate Frank’s dedication and efforts.”
Vogel was brought in last summer amidst high expectations, tasked with guiding the Suns’ star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. While the team showed promise at times, they struggled to find their rhythm consistently.
Injuries hampered Beal’s contributions for much of the season, and the Suns faced challenges with turnovers and a shallow bench. Despite Vogel expressing confidence in his position before Game 4 against the Wolves, he now finds himself without a job.
Team owner Mat Ishbia has demonstrated a willingness to make bold moves since taking over the franchise. Notably, he orchestrated the acquisition of Durant and the firing of former coach Monty Williams. With Vogel’s departure, the Suns will be seeking their third head coach in as many seasons.
“We are committed to achieving championship success, and last season fell short of our expectations,” remarked Jones. “We will assess our operations and make the necessary adjustments to pursue our championship aspirations.”
With limited flexibility under the league’s salary cap, Jones faces challenges in reshaping the roster. Key players like Durant, Booker, and Beal command significant salaries, while Grayson Allen recently secured a lucrative contract extension.
Despite finishing the regular season with a respectable 49-33 record and clinching the No. 6 seed, the Suns’ postseason aspirations were cut short. Vogel, who previously won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, concludes his tenure with a 480-422 coaching record across 12 seasons with the Pacers, Lakers, and Suns.
