Cleveland Cavaliers Consider Acquiring Lauri Markkanen from Utah Jazz

An NBA writer has put forward the suggestion that the Cleveland Cavaliers pursue a trade to bring back Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz during the upcoming summer period.

Markkanen was initially traded to the Jazz as part of the Donovan Mitchell blockbuster deal in September 2022. Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report outlined a trade scenario where the Cavaliers would acquire Markkanen in exchange for forward/center Evan Mobley, guard/forward Isaac Okoro (via sign-and-trade), and the 2024 first-round pick (No. 20 overall).

While the Jazz missed the playoffs this season, the Cavaliers are currently in the second round facing the Boston Celtics. Markkanen showcased his skills in 55 games for the Jazz this season, averaging 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists with impressive shooting percentages.

At 26 years old, Markkanen has emerged as a significant talent in the league and is set to earn $18 million next season in the final year of his contract. Swartz emphasized Markkanen’s potential as a key offensive option alongside Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Jarrett Allen, addressing the Cavaliers’ need for additional scoring.

With career averages of 18.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, Markkanen has already secured the Most Improved Player of the Year Award for the 2022-23 season. If the trade were to materialize, the Cavaliers would boast a formidable “Big 4” lineup comprising Mitchell, Markkanen, Garland, and Allen, potentially enhancing their championship aspirations.
