“I can’t envision that”: Insights from within the team on how the Bulldogs can break free from their current slump

AFL legends have urged Western Bulldogs players to adopt a more selfless approach to their roles in order to revive the club’s season amidst mounting pressure on head coach Luke Beveridge.

The Bulldogs’ disappointing 3-5 start to the 2024 season hit a low point with last week’s unexpected loss to Hawthorn, intensifying scrutiny on the club ahead of a crucial match against Richmond.

During a segment on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 called Inside the Four Walls, four-time premiership player Jordan Lewis emphasized the need for the Bulldogs to prioritize camaraderie and support for their teammates.

“I don’t see that with the Bulldogs. I don’t see them celebrate together, I don’t see them pick players up off the ground, I don’t see them block for each other on a regular basis,” Lewis said.

He suggested that players should focus on how they can contribute to the team’s success rather than solely on their individual performances.

Jack Riewoldt, a Tigers champion, added that some Bulldogs players may be feeling the pressure of potentially playing for their careers or spots in the team. He emphasized the importance of coaches reassuring players about their roles and responsibilities.

Riewoldt also highlighted the need for the coaching staff to consider changing their approach to keep the message fresh and effective, pointing out that even great coaches need to reinvent themselves to maintain their impact.

While the focus remains on improving performance and achieving success on the field, Riewoldt cautioned against solely fixating on winning, as it could lead to added pressure and hinder the team’s progress.

Overall, the message from these AFL greats is clear: for the Western Bulldogs to turn their season around, they need to embrace a selfless attitude, support each other, and be willing to adapt to new strategies and approaches.
