Essendon faces a setback as recruit Xavier Duursma sustains a quad injury during Wednesday’s training session, sidelining him for a minimum of four weeks. Duursma, who has made a notable impact since joining from Port Adelaide, expressed frustration over the unexpected injury, describing it as a “pretty decent tear.”
The injury comes at a crucial time for Essendon, with upcoming matches against Greater Western Sydney, North Melbourne (where he will miss the opportunity to compete against his younger brother Zane for the first time), Richmond, and Gold Coast. Despite averaging 19 disposals this season and showcasing strong performances, including a season-high 26 disposals against Port Adelaide in round four, Duursma faces a period of rehabilitation.
A blow for the Bombers – Xavier Duursma has torn his quad at training today and will miss at least four weeks.
Disappointing for the Essendon wingman who has had a strong start to his career at his second club. @AFLcomau

Although Duursma has not experienced significant soft tissue injuries in the past, aside from minor hamstring concerns, he missed 10 weeks last year due to a PCL issue. Meanwhile, midfielder Jye Caldwell is expected to play against his former club despite calf tightness, while ruckman Sam Draper is aiming for a return after missing the previous game with a knee injury.
Young defender Zach Reid, recovering from a hamstring injury, may make his comeback via the VFL. Essendon, currently positioned fifth with four wins, two losses, and an Anzac Day draw against Collingwood, must navigate these challenges as they progress through the season.
