“Sun Devils Strengthen Running Back Unit by Adding AAC Freshman of the Year 27-Year-Old Talent”

Arizona State’s already formidable backfield has received a significant boost in talent. Alton McCaskill, a junior running back who earned AAC Freshman of the Year honors at Houston in 2021 after tallying 18 touchdowns from scrimmage, has announced his transfer to ASU from Colorado. Despite suffering a torn ACL, McCaskill’s potential is undeniable.

Joining a crowded running back group that includes senior starter Cameron Skattebo and last season’s top backup DeCarlos Brooks, McCaskill adds depth and skill to an already talented roster. With the recent addition of sophomore transfer Raleek Brown from USC and the presence of sophomore Kyson Brown and incoming freshman Jason Brown, the Sun Devils boast an impressive array of talent in their running back corps.

McCaskill’s tenure at Colorado was marred by injury, limiting his playing time to just 56 offensive snaps in 2023. However, his explosive performance at Houston, where he rushed for 961 yards on 189 carries, showcases his potential impact. Additionally, with the possibility of three more seasons of eligibility due to his limited playtime in 2022 and 2023, McCaskill presents a valuable asset for ASU.

Expressing gratitude for his time at Colorado, McCaskill looks forward to the opportunities awaiting him at Arizona State. A healthy McCaskill could compete for significant playing time and potentially a starting role in Tempe. Moreover, with the departures of Skattebo and Brooks on the horizon, McCaskill’s contributions could be vital for the Sun Devils in the coming seasons.

Coach Kenny Dillingham’s offensive strategy, influenced by his mentor Mike Norvell, could see the Sun Devils utilize more personnel groupings with two running backs, similar to Norvell’s approach during his tenure as the offensive coordinator at Florida State. With players like Raleek Brown capable of filling versatile roles, ASU’s offense could see innovative formations to maximize their offensive firepower.
