Mathieu Severance Concludes Kansas City Chiefs Mini-Camp and Secures Contract with Montreal Alouettes

During the Kansas City Chiefs’ mini-camp, Mathieu Severance, a 2019 graduate of Lynn English and record holder in passing yards and touchdowns, adhered to a rigorous schedule. This routine comprised waking up at 6 a.m., engaging in playbook study sessions, attending team meetings, participating in drills and 30-minute scrimmages, concluding activities around 5 p.m., and dedicating additional time to playbook review.

Reflecting on his experience, Severance expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to observe the operations of a championship-caliber team and gain insights into their daily operations. Despite his usual ability to anticipate events, Severance admitted to being surprised by the invitation from the defending Super Bowl Champions, Kansas City Chiefs, as it was unexpected compared to other potential offers from teams like Baltimore, the Steelers, the Jaguars, and Dallas.

During the three-day camp, which featured two-a-day sessions and extensive meetings, Severance appreciated the chance to learn from renowned figures such as head coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. His days were filled with activities, including playbook review until bedtime, yet Severance approached the experience with enthusiasm rather than viewing it as arduous labor.

Although he did not secure a spot on the training camp roster, Severance valued the opportunity to receive feedback from defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, who praised his intelligence and encouraged him to continue pursuing football. Subsequently, Severance received an offer from the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, which he eagerly accepted, recognizing it as a chance to focus solely on his professional football career without the distractions of other commitments.

While Severance remains focused on his immediate goals with the Montreal Alouettes, he ultimately aspires to return to the NFL, viewing his CFL stint as a stepping stone toward that objective. Despite his short-term commitment to Canadian football, Severance’s ultimate ambition is to secure a place in the NFL, and he remains determined to achieve that goal in the future.
