“Geelong Revives Pursuit of 24-Year-Old Talent After His Controversial Departure from North Melbourne”
Geelong’s interest in Thomas dates back to his tumultuous exit from North Melbourne, marked by an 18-game ban by the AFL and subsequent termination due to concerning behavior toward women.
Cats coach Chris Scott, when asked about Thomas in April, maintained an “open-minded” stance on the club’s list management policy, refusing to rule out the possibility of recruiting the 69-game player.
Thomas’ name resurfaced in headlines recently after North Melbourne CEO Jennifer Watt disclosed the club’s inability to effect significant change in the young player. Additionally, reports indicate Thomas is under fresh police investigation.
Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie, however, stated that the club has not considered Thomas as a potential recruit, emphasizing a focus on other priorities within the game.
“We haven’t discussed him,” said Mackie. “Our attention is directed towards more pressing matters. While I understand the inquiry, it’s not a topic on our agenda. We’re concentrating on our immediate objectives.”
Geelong is anticipated to be active in player movement this year, with the club linked to Western Bulldogs’ Bailey Smith. Securing Smith would bolster the Cats’ emerging midfield talent as they aim to rebuild after a disappointing 2023 season.
The Cats have strategically strengthened their squad in recent offseasons, signing promising prospects like Jack Bowes, Tanner Bruhn, and Ollie Henry, along with drafting local talent Jhye Clark with Pick 8.
Geelong’s planning extends to the imminent arrival of Tasmania’s AFL team in 2028, aiming to position themselves as contenders by then.
“It’s been part of our strategy for some time,” noted Mackie. “We’ve been proactive in shaping our list and performance to align with Tasmania’s entry into the league.”
As discussions about Tasmania’s inclusion gain momentum, Geelong remains focused on both on-field and off-field preparations to ensure readiness for the future challenges and opportunities the new team brings.
“At this stage, we’re equipped with Picks 17, 37, 55, and 73 for the upcoming National Draft,” added Mackie, highlighting the ongoing planning and preparation underway at Geelong.
