Memphis Football Scores Big: Tennessee’s Tackling Titan Elijah Herring Commits!

Elijah Herring, a former standout linebacker for Tennessee, announced his commitment to the Tigers on Friday evening via social media. Herring, who led the Volunteers in tackles during the 2023 season, is expected to play a pivotal role in Memphis’ defense.

A native of Murfreesboro, Herring recorded 79 tackles and started in 11 games for Tennessee in 2023 before entering the transfer portal last month.

His arrival adds strength to an already formidable linebacker corps, led by Chandler Martin, who earned first-team All-AAC honors. Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Jordon Hankins has been active in bolstering the team’s depth, securing transfers Javante Mackey, Jayden Flaker, and Matt Hudson during the winter transfer window.

Head coach Ryan Silverfield hinted at the potential acquisition of a transfer from an SEC program during a recent fan event, noting the attraction of Memphis’ culture and program to players from higher-tier conferences.

Herring’s commitment materialized less than 24 hours later, making him the fourth player to pledge to the Tigers during the spring transfer window, following Greg Desrosiers Jr. from UMass, Reggie Grimes II from Oklahoma, and Chris Adams from Old Dominion.
