“Colts OC Shane Steichen on Balancing Self-Preservation for 21-Year-Old Rising Star Amid Injury Concerns”
Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter recently emphasized the importance of quarterback Anthony Richardson’s availability for more than just a few games, especially after enduring several physical setbacks in his rookie season. Colts head coach Shane Steichen echoed this sentiment during a conversation with NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
Steichen stressed the need for Richardson to make smart decisions about when to evade tackles, emphasizing the importance of preserving his health while also recognizing critical game situations where risking contact may be necessary.
Despite Richardson’s promising physical attributes, including his impressive stature and athleticism, he faced early challenges, suffering a concussion in Week 2 and ultimately ending his rookie campaign after just four regular-season appearances due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Although Richardson was named the starter shortly after the Colts’ first preseason game last August, injuries disrupted his development on the field. When asked by Breer whether the Colts and Richardson might view his setbacks as a blessing in disguise, Steichen acknowledged the difficulty of seeing their quarterback sidelined but highlighted the opportunity for Richardson to gain perspective and improve his game while rehabilitating.
Looking ahead, Richardson is listed as one of the top contenders for the Comeback Player of the Year Award for the 2024 season, reflecting the optimism surrounding his potential return to form. Steichen and the Colts organization are hopeful that Richardson’s resilience will keep him off the sidelines and back in action for the foreseeable future.
