West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson has acknowledged ongoing discussions with No.1 draft pick Harley Reid regarding a potential contract extension. However, Simpson has emphasized that he is not directly involved in these talks, prioritizing the teenager’s well-being above all else.
Reid’s name has been linked to interest from other clubs, notably Essendon, despite his limited seven-game experience. The 19-year-old is currently contracted with West Coast until the end of the 2026 season under the standard three-year deal for top 20 draft selections from the previous year.
Since the conclusion of Round 6, clubs and first-year players have had the option to negotiate contract extensions, prompting speculation about Reid’s future with the Eagles.
Addressing the rumors surrounding Reid, Simpson downplayed the significance of contract discussions at this early stage of the player’s career.
“We haven’t really delved into it,” Simpson commented on AFL 360. “Considering he’s only played seven games… I understand it’s a hot topic, but for a 19-year-old, we’re discussing figures like $20 million over 10 years. It’s not our current focus.”
Simpson emphasized the importance of allowing Reid to enjoy his football and grow as an AFL player without undue pressure.
“While conversations are ongoing, they’re not being facilitated by me,” Simpson clarified.
The Eagles, amidst a season of improvement under Simpson’s leadership, aspire to secure Reid’s future in Perth while enhancing the club’s appeal to prospective talents.
“We typically pursue Western Australian talent we didn’t initially draft,” Simpson remarked. “That approach may persist. As a large club with a substantial supporter base and resources, we’ve historically been an attractive destination.”
Simpson believes the team’s improved performance this season will further bolster its recruitment prospects.
“With a more competitive brand of football this year, we aim to engage our members in our journey and, hopefully, attract top-tier talent,” Simpson added.
Presently placed 15th on the ladder and lacking a third-round draft pick, West Coast’s current draft selections include Picks 4, 24, and 60.
